North Korea : Rocket launch (13 April 2012)
North Korea (13 April 2012)
France condemns this morning’s rocket launch by North Korea in violation of its international obligations. This is a provocative act that will increase tensions in the region and complicate the search for a solution to the North Korean nuclear issue.
France reaffirms that UN Security Council resolutions 1718 and 1874 demand that North Korea refrain from any activity related to a ballistic missile program. Resolution 1874 notably demands that it not conduct any “launch using ballistic missile technology.”
Together with its partners, France will refer this new development to the Security Council in order to adopt decisions likely to urge North Korea to comply with international law with a view toward the complete, verifiable and irreversible dismantling of its nuclear and ballistic missile program.
France also calls on North Korea to refrain from any other gesture likely to further increase tensions in the region.
The Ministre d’Etat will consult with several of his counterparts, notably with those from the region, in the next few days, in order to jointly examine the consequences that must be drawn from the situation.
