North Korea : French official statements (Paris, 19 December 2011)
We learned this morning of the death of the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-il.
France reaffirms its attachment to peace and stability in the peninsula and expresses the hope of seeing positive changes in the North Korean regime, whether with respect to freedoms, the stability of the peninsular or compliance with its international obligations with respect to nuclear non-proliferation.
We are monitoring the situation with the utmost vigilance, in collaboration with our partners and allies. On this day, our thoughts go first of all to the North Korean people who have suffered hardship and have been denied human rights for too many years now.
As the Ministre d’Etat stated this morning, France hopes that North Korea will one day regain its freedom. It will continue to take action in support of the North Korean people, notably by supporting the humanitarian programs aimed at improving their living conditions.
